The Conference will take place in the Main Building of Pedagogical University of Kraków

Podchorążych 2
30-084 Kraków, POLAND

Kraków, the main city of south Poland, the ancient capital of Poland, seat of the second oldest university in central Europe (1364), has been a center for scholarship and politics for many centuries. It has traditionally served as a link between the cultures of the East and the West. A city of Gothic convents, Renaissance arcades, Baroque churches and Art Nouveau coffee houses, Kraków has always been an intellectual and artistic center. In the years 1491 - 1495, Mikolaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus) studied liberal arts there.

The famous anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski was a native of Kraków and writer Joseph Conrad (Józef Korzeniowski) as well.

Scientific achievements of the XIX century included the work of the following professors: the chemist Karol Olszewski (1846 - 1915) and the physicist Zygmunt Wróblewski (1845 - 1888), who were the first to liquefy oxygen and nitrogen from the air in 1883, and later also other gases; the physiologist Napoleon Cybulski (1854 - 1919), who explained the functioning of adrenaline; the physicist Marian Smoluchowski (1872 - 1917), the author of major works on the kinetic theory of matter; the chemist Leon Marchlewski (1869 - 1946), who conducted research on chlorophyll.

After World War II, the cultural tradition was continued by Andrzej Wajda (Oscar - Academy Award 2000) and the music of Krzysztof Penderecki. Kraków is also home to two Nobel laureates in literature, Czeslaw Milosz (1980) and Wisława Szymborska (1996).

Krakow lies in the southern part of Poland on the Vistula River in a valley, 219 meters above sea level. Approximately 300 km north is Warsaw, the capital of Poland, and 100 km south are the Tatra Mountains. Ten kilometers from the center of Krakow, Salt Mine in Wieliczka (listed at the 1st UNESCO List of Human Heritage) is situated. Nazi Concentration Camp of Auschwitz and Birkenauis located seventy kilometers west of Krakow.

Travel

GPS coordinates

By plane
The John Paul II International Airport in Balice is located 15 km (approx. 10 miles) from the city centre.

The train service provided by PKP is the fastest link between the centre of Krakow and the airport. Travel time is 16 minutes. The train station is located 200 m from the T1 international terminal. For travel between the terminals and the station we suggest using the free Shuttle Bus service.

Public transport buses (No. 292 and 208) circulate between the airport and the center of the town also. Tickets may be purchased at kiosks or, for a slight surcharge, from the bus driver. Ticket must be validated after boarding/buying from a driver.

A taxi from the airport to the centre of the city will cost you about 100 PLN (Polish Zloty).

You can also fly to Warsaw and Katowice. From Warsaw's main railway station you can take an InterCity or an Express train; the journey takes about 3 hours. To request a taxi from the airport to the railway station, go to one of the approved taxi company desks in the airport arrivals hall or take bus. A train ticket will cost about 150 PLN for second class and may be purchased at the Orbis office at the airport or at the train station itself. From Katowice airport you can take minivan to Krakow's city center, but please make a reservation for it when you buy your ticket.

By train
There are direct international railway connections to Krakow from Austria (Vienna), the Czech Republic (Prague), Germany (Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt/M, Frankfurt/O, Leipzig), Hungary (Budapest), Rumania (Bucharest), Slovakia (Bratislava, Kosice), and Ukraine (Kiev, Lvov, Odessa). Krakow is also linked with all other main towns and cities in Poland. The railway station is in the centre of the town, close to the area in which most of the hotels are situated. If you arrive by train and want to take a taxi we would advise you call for a radio-taxi or take one from the stand on the rooftop parking above the railway station (reachable by stairs or elevator from any of the platforms). Rates of taxis in front of the station's main building are more expensive. The train schedule is available on the railway company's web page (see PKP or on the Hafas page).

By car
Krakow is located close to important roads, highways and at the crossroads of E7 (linking the North with the South) and E4 (linking the West with the East). One may also travel to Krakow along the A4 highway running from the West through Silesia (the toll for this highway is 10 PLN). There are several parking areas in the centre of Krakow.

By coach
Many travel agencies offer regular coach connections between Krakow and numerous cities in Europe. Travelling by coach, one may arrive from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Holland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
